We all have a family member or a friend who has been touched with cancer. I lost a grandmother and a uncle to cancer. Living in Miami, we all know all the good deed's that take place in The League Against Cancer facility and how many lives it saves from Cancer. Last night they held their annual telethon to raise money for this noble cause. Last week, Florida Governor Charlie Crist decided to veto $650,000 in grants and aids for contracted service for the League Against Cancer (http://www.bizjournals.com/southflorida/stories/2007/05/21/daily34.html?page=2). This is what was written, "not recommended by the governor or agency."

The organization has been responsible for bringing kids and adults from all over the world to be treated in their facility at no cost. Last night, they had a 10 year old boy they brought from Cuba to be treated for an aggressive form of cancer. The doctors in Cuba told the family that is was only bad migraines. He will be fine. Thanks to the care and treatment he received in the League's facility, he survived the aggressive cancer.

According to the League's website, it states that an average of $50,000 per person of expenses are incurred by the organization at no cost to the patient. Not to mention the over 250 doctors that work for FREE !! Thanks to your veto, 13 men, women, and/or children will not be treated this year. It is only fair to mention that the last 10 years, the Florida Department of Health has been generous enough to donate to the League. The donation began with $1 million and increased to $2 million in 1999-2000. In the year 2001, the original amount of $1 million was reduced to $900,000. They did receive the $900,000 donation this year.

By signing this petition, we are letting our voices be heard Governor Charlie Crist and informing you that it was big mistake not to award the $650,000 to the League Against Cancer. Also, please go to the website and to learn more about the wonderful service the League provides and to read about their history: (http://ligacontraelcancer.org/english/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=42).

Governor make a trip to Miami and check out the facility with your own eyes and interact with the kids that are there.

    • Those people who made the decision to deny the funds needed for the League Against Cancer; it's more than obvious it won't affect them because they will always have health insurance. It's a shame that they are not there to really provide for the poor.
