Recently fanfiction.net decided to remove all NC-17 rated fiction from it's site. They issued the following statement.

NC-17 based entries will no longer be accepted. Though they are very small portion of the site the adult stories have generated almost all of the complaints filed on record in the past year. Moreover, the highest concentration of them are growing in areas with subjects targeted to younger readers and with increasingly controversial subject matters. However, not all NC-17 based stories fall into the description but as result of their increasing volume a decision has been made to resolve this problem. Innocent writers will be affected but this has to be done considering the non-filtering scheme of the site.

As a writer I find this unfair that this sort of fiction is been removed for the very reasons it is rated that in the first place. People complaining shouldn't be reading it, rating systems are there for a reason. 'controversial subject matter'is what makes it NC-17, and it's not aimed at younger readers, it's rated NC-17 so younger readers DON'T read it.

So if you believe this is unfair and wish to continue reading and posting NC-17 material on fanfiction.net please sign this petition!

    • Why should older audiences be penalized for what immature "younger readers" do?

    • It is pathetic that they have taken them down, and as a writer of FFN, and as a person, I wanna see them back up, dammit! I found my place at ffn, and I don't want to stop going on there because of some stupid ban. Bring them back!

    • Just because some kids read something they weren't supposed to doesn't mean you can take the NC-17 rated fics away! That's what the rating system is for!!

    • As long as proper ratings are enforced, there can be no legal liability involved. Fanfiction.net has entertained its visitors by hosting NC-17 rated fics for several years now, and there is no apparent need for change.

    • NC-17 stories are for adults and adults only and I love the stories and I'm an adult. Keep the NC-17 stories even if you have to devise a way to block out the children.

    • I think that it is the readers choice what to read and not read. The ratings are there for a reason and should be taken seriously. It is not fair to take away nc-17 stories, as long as the appropriate warnings are included.

    • What types of complaints are there? I agree, child porn is wrong, as is bestiality, but what's wrong with 2 adults (gay or straight) engaging in adult activities?

    • People who are complaining shouldn't be reading adult fics in the first place! They've been clearly marked, and it's their fault if they're too stuck up and uptight.

    • People can easily filter out what they do not want to read..however if it all nc-17 stories are removed, many others will be denied the opportunity to read what they want to read.

    • The NC-17 stories at Fanfiction.net are clearly marked and if a person reads the stories it is their choice to do so. If a parent is complaining about their child reading NC-17 stories they should monitor their children better and install some sort of netnanny.

    • This is so sad...I always thought FF.Net was a pretty cool place. Open minded, if nothing else. No there caving in to a few petty, spoiled peoples demands. If people don't pay attention to the warning on a story, they deserve what they get. This is all I have to say. Good Day.

    • NC-17 shouldn't be taken off! It's a person's right to write whatever they want since you provided them with the space. I agree, there are complaints about NC-17, but you can't shut something down just cuz someone complains. Not everyone will like the way you run things, but you can't just cave in and ignore all the beautiful pieces that require that element in their fiction! It'd be like censorship!

    • What people read is a choice they make. Every adult-focused slash/het fic I've ever come across has content warnings that give the reader plenty of time to turn away before reading the first word of the story. And every NC-17 fic is not porn, though that's the popular belief. I'm against this completly. .

    • We've put up wit a lot of shit at ff.net (technical glitches, moves, etc) but dis is da straw that broke the camels back. The ratings and warnings are on NC-17 fics for a reason! If parents are worried about their kids stumbling on ta a NC-17 fic then they should get a net nanny program. It's not our problem. Bring back NC-17!!

    • If you have a rating system in place and it is being used by the authors then there is no need to censor your entries. The rating system has been in place for movies for a very long time, and even video games are being rated now. This gives people the choice to view or not view material that they may find objectional. In my experience writers of NC-17 fiction are very careful about ratings and warnings. People who complain after reading several warnings have no argument.

    • They already have a warning not to read them, so they shouldn't complain about it.
