We the undersigned would ask that the Greek Government and the Environmental Departments of Greece and the European Union address the threat posed by the Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) to the endangered and endemic groves of Phoenix theophrasti on the island of Crete. We would ask that funds and expertise be made available to limit the spread of the weevil and to protect this precious native species of palm. It is also essential that the public are made aware of up-to-date methods of control and eradication through public meetings, radio and television broadcasts, newspaper articles and posters.

- construction near the palm will inevitable cause water to be withdrawn from the ground and result in a lowered water table. This is guaranteed to destroy the ecological conditions necessary to the survival of this rare endemic. Do not tamper with the ecossystem of a plant confined to a very restricted ecological niche!

- I do not think the majority of people realise how serious this problem is. I have seen many dead palm trees in the Lassithi and Heraklion areas. Surely these dead trees have to be burnt???

- Honeyguiders know the Cretan palms at Souda, near Plakias. Let's hope these and others can be safe - or saved - from damage.
