I am a concerned citizen of the State of California. I am aware of the case of Michael Duc Ta, a young man who at the age of 16 drove a car from which another young man shot a gun. Even though there were no injuries and Michael Duc Ta had no prior arrests or convictions and he did not shoot the gun, he was given a sentence of 35 years to life. Due to public outcry, his sentence was reduced to 11 years to Life. Even though this is a much-reduced sentence, given that the Life is still attached it is a very severe sentence. He has already served 6+ years of his sentence in adult state prison.
We the undersigned, respectfully request that you, as the Governor of our great State of California, in the interest of true justice, commute Michael Duc Tas sentence to time served and allow him out on parole. He has been continuing his education in prison and has been taking advantage of the few programs offered to him on a Level 4 yard. He has a strong support system and if given the chance will fulfill his potential as a respectable and solid citizen of society.
Thank you.

- I think he has done enough time. Please rehabilitate him instead of continue to punish him!

- I sent a letter to the Free Duc Ta committee some time ago and it was forwarded to Duc Ta. I didn't know it had been sent to him until Duc Ta wrote me a long letter of thanks. He never once complained or whined, just expressed gratitude for my interest in his case. I am convinced that this child will become a very special man, one able and willing to make major contributions to society, IF he is released soon. If he is forced to serve his full sentence, even the reduced one, I predict that, at best, he will leave a broken man. At worst, he will be a bitter and, most likely, a criminal man. He should be released to find his way to productive and healthy adulthood before it is too late. Lack of hope is the worst that can happen to any of us, especially to a child. There is no value to society or to Duc Ta to holding him even ONE DAY longer. Whether one believes that he "deserved" to be incarcerated or not, any thoughtful and compassionate person must be able to see that it is time to let him out now.

- Please take a little time to review this case. The right thing to do should be clear enough once you do.

- I feel that Duc sentence is extreme, I am not saying that it was legal has to what happened, but there is alot more crime out there that people have committed worse then Duc crime, and they do less time. I feel that he should be given a second chance with his life and with society. After seeing that movie it touched my heart, and I believe with all my heart that Duc is remorseful what has happened. Most of these kids have had hard lives, and have grown up so fast because of what there parents have shown them, and the life styles that they live with there parents, thats what there taught. Like that saying says Children learn what they live. What the system should is not punish these kids with 25 years to life, but rehabilitate them, and there parents also, alot of times the parents are the ones that allow there children to drink or smoke out in there home, because alot of parents say they rather have there children drink and smoke at home then in the streets.

- Youth's have voices and need to be heard out. I am now in the process of a speech of why it is wrong for juveniles to be tried as adults. They have not yet lived as an adult. Who are the role models of these children, who teaches them, and who do they see leading; adults. It takes a village to raise a child (a fimiliar quote) and America is the village. There's someone before them. If they are tried as adults, all of America should also. What affects one, affects all. Whether we except it or not, whether black or white; we are a connected chain.
