We, the below citizens of the sovereign State of Mississippi, who have signed this petition, hereby requests you, the Governor of the State of Mississippi, to stop the campaign of ethnic cleansing and cultural genocide which has increased at a disturbing rate since your inauguration. In this so-called "multi-cultural" society, it has become increasingly obvious that there exists one culture that some believe must die while all others are allowed and encouraged to flourish. It is our beloved Southern cultural heritage that we seek to preserve at all costs. We vow to never surrender our Southern language, speech, manners, music, literature, tradition, thought, custom and faith - all of which are woven into the threads of the beautiful symbols that we cherish. We say enough is enough! Leave our cultural heritage and symbols alone or we'll elect a governor who will!

- The Mississippi State Flag is a historical symbol, and should not be viewed as racial. Taking this flag down will not change any part of the racism that goes on in the state of Mississippi or the rest of the nation for that matter. If these people were more educated in what went on in the Civil War, they might not be so quick to change a symbol of history. Also, changing the state flag is taking away rights of the southern people if it is viewed as a racial matter. Our ancestors died for their way of life and what they believed in, and in their honor the Mississippi Flag should not be changed. There is not a town in Mississippi where there is no Dr.Martin Luther King Blvd or Dr,; he died defending what he believed in and is very well remembered and recognized for it. The countless soldiers (black and white) who died in the Civil War should be given this same privelage by keeping the flag that they so bravely stood up and died for.

- Let's see, Abraham Lincoln did not have the constitutional authority to declare war and invade the south. Lincoln and his troops, killed, raped, tortured, stole, burned, and destroyed everything in the South. My great Great Great Grandfather died in the Elmira, NY prison camp. I think the northern government owes me $1.00 a day, for every day since Lincoln violated our constitutional rights, PLUS INTEREST. Slavery existed world wide without the South. The War Between The States was NOT fought Over slavery. No slave was ever held under the Confederate flag. We are the backbone of America. Be careful you don't break your back, you might have a real hard time standing up without us.

- If you take this flag away. Lets just change it to solid white because that is what this country has come to be about. We Surrender instead of putting up a fight.

- I am concerned about the lack of REAL reason behind both of the arguments. Taking down the flag will not erase hundreds of years of institutionalized racism in the south eastern portion of the nation, or indeed the nation as a whole. Nor will keeping a flag flying preserve "heritage" or "history." I think a compromise must be made. Compromise has to come from the reeducation of generations of americans and it can start today. The most accurate accounts of history must be taught in the classrooms. Our war-heros were men and women, just like you and me. They had amazingly wonderful attributes, but they had their faults as well. One-sided narratives will never teach our children the values of tradition, or the values of tolerance, exceptance of differance, and equality. The flag represents different concepts to different people. It conjures up different memories about anscestors. When will the rhetoric of religion, tradition, bureaucracy and hypocrisy come to the point that is most important about the conflicts in the south, past and present? Intolerance begets intolerance. The issue is not the flag, it is a war about a war. It is about your history versus mine. Lets reeducate ourselves, and truly educate our children. The war is in our heads. The battle is between the facts, and truth. Our weapons, are questions. Question your history, your heros, your values, the flag. Question yourselves, your pasts, your futures. Most importantly, question your answers.

- I feel that the deliberate destruction and repression of our Southern heritage is as disturbing as the racial issues our government is trying to fight.

- My great grandfather fought and died for this flag . It had nothing to do with slavery. It is my heritage and I plan to keep it.
