Bring Back Funding For Breastfeeding Awareness Week

We are asking the Department of Health to continue to fund Breastfeeding Awareness Week.

Breastfed babies save the NHS money because they are less likely to need medical treatment. Statistically, formula-fed babies are more likely to get colds, ear infections, milk allergies, diarrhea, urinary tract infections and bacterial meningitis.

Many mothers will not consider breastfeeding unless the benefits are highlighted to them and they will not understand that there are risks to formula feeding.

We believe that cutting funding for Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a short sighted way to save money.

    • We don't need massive funding (pens, diary covers etc are nice but not essential), but to remove the SUPPORT for this week of awareness-raising, and to leave us unco-ordinated in our local initiatives, is a massive kick in the teeth for the thousands of voluntary sector breastfeeding peer supporters, and shows a lack of commitment towards the message that breastfeeding reduces health inequalities.

    • Breastfeeding MUST come before formula feeding. Stop the free tokens for formula feeds for people on benefits. Maybe then they would breastfeed instead!!
