We are asking the Department of Health to continue to fund Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
Breastfed babies save the NHS money because they are less likely to need medical treatment. Statistically, formula-fed babies are more likely to get colds, ear infections, milk allergies, diarrhea, urinary tract infections and bacterial meningitis.
Many mothers will not consider breastfeeding unless the benefits are highlighted to them and they will not understand that there are risks to formula feeding.
We believe that cutting funding for Breastfeeding Awareness Week is a short sighted way to save money.

- In order to give all our babies the best start in life it's essential that we raise the culture of breastfeeding to that of the norm.

- Breastfeeding mums need more support and breast feeding needs to be higher profile - breastfeeding should be the "norm"

- Short term savings will lead to long term problems. The government need to promote the huge benefits of breastfeeding to the health of the nation, where is the foresight??

- I am still breastfeeding my 8 month old baby but would have given up early on if it wasn't for the midwives and volunteers who helped me to overcome my initial problems. Support for breastfeeding mums should be a Government priority, as the small costs incurred from this week long event would surely be recouped from the money saved through the long term health benefits to both mother and baby.

- Breastfeeding is best for baby and has health benefits for mum too, therefore saving the NHS money in the long term. It's also free!
