Lane Stadium at Virginia Tech is currently undergoing renovations to improve and expand its seating capacity. It has come to our attention that the current plan of action includes removing the words 'Home of the Fighting Gobblers' from the outside of the stadium.

While some may view these words as silly or kitschy, they are nevertheless part of the Virginia Tech tradition. Many, many students and guests have looked up and smiled at these words while entering the stadium over the years. These words reflect not only the tenacity and fighting spirit of the Virginia Tech football team, but also the sense of humor and good nature of fans whose team mascot is a giant turkey.

We ask that those responsible at Virginia Tech leave this tradition intact and return the words 'Home of the Fighting Gobblers' to their rightful place after the renovations have been completed.

    • I remember writing Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on all my engineering homework, and seeing the Home of the Fighting Gobblers on Lane Stadium. If tradition is such a big part of college football then we need to keep ours!

    • Keep it up there. It is Hokie Tradition to have 'Home of the Fighting Gobblers' on the outside of Lane Stadium. Not having it up there takes away from the atmosphere of going to a game in Lane Stadium. The new additions will look really nice on the outside of Lane, but if you don't have that phrase on there, then it just will never be the same. With it up there, at least it feels like we have a storied tradition of VT football. Without it, it will only seem like we came out of nowhere in the past 10 years.

    • I went to VT when we were the Gobblers. You can take it off the outside of the stadium but at least put it somewhere that can be seen by everone. As an old school guy, I like the name Gobblers a hell of a lot better than Hokies. To be different is OK to have a name that means nothing is just dumb.
