Since federal and provincial spending on twinned
highways in the Atlantic region now stands in contradiction to the goals
of the Kyoto Accord (to reduce highway traffic and improve the
environment) and since railways in Atlantic Canada and New England have
recently been diverting traffic to our highways (because it is cheaper
for them to do this than to send the shipments by rail), the undersigned
urge both levels of government to ensure improved railway infrastructure
is made a key priority in the proposal to create an Atlantic Gateway
transportation corridor to Central and Western Canada.

- I believe we need to increase the availability of public transit and use more efficient freight transport, not build bigger roads.

- The one thing this province needs less than more trucks on the highways...is more highways...

- Railroads should be a priority in this country for so many reasons.

- With trains burning 5 times less fuel than trucks to move the same amount of freight and with the trucking industry suffering a labour shortage, it only makes sense to improve rail infrastructure.

- ALL!!! the Provinces need better rail service to cut down on polution and save our highways. More and biggerr trucks means more damage to roads and higher repair bills for same.

- Bad idea, it's been done on the Prairies and is wrecking our highways.

- Please, please do not go the way of the UK who allowed railborne freight to become road hauled freight clogging roads, increasing the demand for more fuel consumption, increased pollution and greenhouse gases. Rail transportation is the most eco-friendly mode in the world - use it.

- Highways can only handle so much traffic and they are already over loaded.

- Rail freight is far more environment friendly than increased truck traffic on the highways.

- Railways make economic and environmental sense from both an operational and maintenance perspective when compared with highways. Funding highway expansion using an extremely limited infrastructure budget is very short-sighted public policy by any government.

- Rail infrastucture has to be a large part of the Atlantic Gateway whether from the Port Of Halifax or Strait of Canso.

- I strongly support the use of rail transport as a more efficient use of resources than trucking for moving freight long distances

- Aside from the obvious of reducing traffic and pollution, it would contribute to fewer expenses relating to the upkeep of the highway system
