In November 2009, Nederland voters passed ballot measures 5a/5b to fund construction and operations of a new Nederland Community Library, which will be a valuable community asset. But an aggressive construction schedule is limiting community input. You only get to build a new building once, after that, many opportunities to integrate energy-efficiency and renewable energy measures are lost forever. We believe that sufficient time and greater community involvement should be allowed by the Library Board in the design and construction process, and schedule, to carefully consider the integration of renewable energy features such as Solar-Thermal, Geothermal, and Solar Photovoltaics, and that Grant funding for these options be aggressively pursued, and that a Public Purchase Agreement (PPA) for financing these renewable energy options be given serious consideration, and sufficient time and flexibility to succeed. We, the undersigned, believe that our community should demonstrate environmental leadership by achieving a sustainable Nederland Community Library facility, with greater commitment to energy-efficiency and renewable energy measures than is now planned.

    • How can you justify building anything for the public, with public funds, and be so short sighted? This will help keep costs down in the long run, and more importantly, be responsible to the town and planet. You set an example either way - make it a good one!

    • I agree that it is wise to slow down construction to allow for renewable energy solutions for Nederland Community Library.

    • If we want a sustainable world, these are the types of decisions we are going to have to make in every aspect of our lives. Thank you George for helping us to realize that there is something we can do right in our own community.

    • Seen in the light of global climate issues, it would be a shortsighted blunder to build the new library without using the best available options for clean, renewable energy to power the building.

    • Go local and be wise about resources and finances. Great projects are well thought out and take time... must be patient to make it the best possible for the community and the environment.

    • incorporating energy conservation elements and renewable energy sources into the design will be cheaper in the long run. For example, a number of years ago, the Rocky Mountain Institute in Snowmass did this and their utility bill is less that $5/mo.
