Respected Congressman Mr Steve Kagen,
We the North East Wisconsin residents of Indian (Asia) origin, would like to voice our concerns regarding the current ongoing humanitarian crisis in the South Asian nation of Sri Lanka where a violent civil war is raging between the Sri Lankan armed forces and secessionist Tamil rebels. We would like to bring to your attention the following:
1) The use of internationally banned cluster bombs by the Sri Lankan armed forces.
2) The repeated shelling of medical facilities and civilian shelters in the "Safe Zone" areas declared by the Sri Lankan armed forces in the rebel-held territory.
4) The mistreatment of war dead violating the Geneva Convention rules.
About 1000 civilians have been killed in the recent weeks and about 250,000 civilians are caught in the crossfire and are living in grave humanitarian conditions. The prevailing situation in the war zone brings back memories of the 9/11 attacks that happened here in USA. The civilians in this part of the world are forced to relive 9/11 every day of their life with their shelters and hospitals shelled and bombed indiscriminately often for up to five hours continuously. The war imagery coming out of Sri Lanka are incomprehensible to us.
In view of the deteriorating humanitarian situation, we urge you to work with the US government to strongly condemn the acts of human rights violations in the disguise of a war and take the necessary action to punish the perpetrators.
