Dear Dr. Singh, Mr. Patil and Mrs. Gandhi,
We are very alarmed at the escalating violence and communal tension in Vadodara following the demolition of a dargah, and subsequent deaths due to police firing. As concerned Indians from the United States and elsewhere, we urge you to take action at the earliest to protect the lives and property of citizens in extreme danger. Reports indicate that inaction and sometimes irresponsible actions from the local administration are making the situation worse.
We have directly spoken to residents of Vadodara in the early hours of Wednesday, May 3rd, and received details of the extremely dangerous situation of the night of May 2nd when mobs were entering Muslim neighborhoods, already resulting in a few deaths. Activists of People's Union of Civil Liberties (PUCL) have informed us that the situation is getting out of control with the police not taking effective action to provide security.
Considering the volatile situation in Gujarat, and the insensitive and sometimes provocative approach of the local administration, the communities have little confidence in protective measures from local police. We urge the Central government to send forces at the earliest to take control of the security situation, and prevent a repeat of the horrific riots of 2002, which are still fresh in our memory. We also urge the state government to act in a responsible manner to protect its citizens. The price of delay or inaction could be deadly.

- The state of Gujarat, India is again experiencing violence directed at the minority Muslim community. The outbreak of violence was started off by the demolition of a 300 year old historical Muslim shrine. The police shooting at the protesters and the subsequent attacks by mobs have led to a death toll of six with many others seriously injured. One man was burned alive by a Hindu extremist mob of 1,500 that had besieged a Muslim neighborhood. Numerous Muslim localities in Vadodara are reported being besieged by violent mobs as we speak.

- the gujarat riots are a blot on the history of modern india. one of the implicit mandates of the UPA govt is to ensure such a thing does not happen again. if it fails to stop the rioting, future generations will hold the UPA morally responsible.

- The Central Government must intervene in states where the State Government is unwilling to take responsibility to protect its citizens. I urge you, please do not allow communal violence to engulf Vadodra or any other part of Gujarat or India again.

- Government of Gujarat has failed once again in its obligation to protect the life of its citizens. By demolishing a centuries old Muslim Shrine they have earned themselves a place right alongside the Taliban who destroyed centuries- old statues of Buddha in Afghanistan. I urge the Center and the President to take steps to protect the religious minorities in Gujarat from further mayhem and killings, imposing the Prasident's Rule if neccesary.
