This is a petition for Philip Halliday to have him released immediately from a Spanish prison where he has languished for over 17 months or expedite a trial for him immediately.

Philip Halliday, a life long resident of Digby Nova Scotia continues to be imprisoned in a Spanish jail. Philip Halliday is innocent of any charges. He was used as a puppet in a drug smuggling ring. He was a crew member on the ship the Destiny Empress and was told this ship was empty and was being sold overseas to a German buyer.

For over 17 months he has remained behind bars with no trial date, innocent and suffering from gall bladder attacks since his arrest in December 2009. He is gravely ill and not receiving adequate medical attention.

Canada needs to defend its innocent citizens who unknowingly get caught up with career criminals. When our Government does not defend good, honest Canadians such as Philip, it diminishes his Canadian citizenship. When his Canadian citizenship is diminished, it is diminished for ALL Canadians.

We will not be satisfied until we know the Canadian Government has done everything in its power to help Philip. To date, no one from this Government has gone above and beyond what they can and should do for an innocent Canadian citizen.

We are petitioning you today to speak to your counterparts in Spain and intervene on Philips behalf to expedite either a trial or his immediate release. Philip's human rights are not being upheld nor is his right to a speedy trial being upheld. This is a gross miscarriage of justice.

It is deplorable that an innocent man continues to languish in a Spanish prison with no recourse.
