This petition is to express our deep concern regarding the current human rights situation in the state of Chiapas, Mexico, where many Indigenous communities are living under a state of low intensity warfare. In light of the forced displacement of the communities of Nuevo Salvador Allende, Buen Samaritano, and Innominado, as well as the arbitrary detention of six citizens in Blue Mounts on August 18, 2007, this matter is particularly pressing. The Mexican military and paramilitary groups continue to use surveillance by plane or vehicle, military bases, harassment, damage to crops and property, and outright attacks causing injury or death in response to communities that organize to improve living situations. With our economic and cultural ties with Mexico, Canada is in a unique position to push for justice for all people in Mexico. We urge you to insist on the immediate release of Mario López Gómez, Feliciano López Hernández, Juan Gómez López, Tomás Gómez López, Daniel Gordillo Trejo, and Jesús Gordillo Trejo. We ask you to insist on reparations for the displaced communities and the eventual demilitarization of all communities in Mexico, particularly those in the state of Chiapas, to bring peace and dignity to the zone.
