Re: SUPPORTING INTRO 658 - Banning Horse-Drawn Carriages in NYC

Speaker Quinn:

Horse-drawn carriages do not belong on the congested streets of New York City. This 19th century relic impedes the flow of traffic and causes much suffering to the horses. Since January 2006, three horses have died public deaths a tragedy to the horse and the reputation of NYC. In that time, there have been several accidents people and horses have been injured. It is a dangerous and inhumane business and it is time for it to go. Other US cities, in addition to London, Paris, Toronto and Beijing, have banned this archaic practice.

We ask you to actively support Intro 658 the bill that would ban horse-drawn carriages - to encourage your colleagues to do the same and to bring it to a vote but only if it also gets your support. A CBS poll in November 2007 showed that 73\% of the respondents voted YES to ban horse drawn carriages from NYC. The public, and not the tiny carriage industry, which has so much unexplained power, should be the arbiter of government policy. A win-win situation for all involved would be to replace this industry with "horse-less carriages" an electric antique car replica that is safe, environmentally friendly and humane. It will bring NYC into the 21st century and make us all proud.

    • It is time for us to open ourselves up, to the true definitions of compassion , and humane treatment of animals. Let's get these magestic creatures off the cement and tar and out of the congestion.

    • I occasionally help to care for a retired carriage horse who worked 25 years on the streets of NYC. He is now a nervous wreck, afraid of loud noises and anything unfamiliar. The state he's in is very sad, especially considering his years of service for people's amusement.

    • It is important to think rationally about the what is happening to the horses. It is sadly a legitimate concern to worry for the safety of the animals, being exposed to what is very unnatural for them.

    • This is definitely deserving of attention and action- These animals arent able to speak for themselves, and they are worth being regarded as more than just serving a purpose that is recreational but harmful in NYC. Great change in the world can begin in small ways, and this is one way that we can offer our hands and hearts to that change.

    • The days of the NYC horse-drawn carriage should finally be put to rest. It really is appaling to see these horses slogging through the cars on the streets in the city.

    • My heart breaks each time I see a carriage horse in this city. These are beautiful creatures that are meant to live and roam free. They are peaceful and not ours to use as slaves. Please ban this industry! It is inhumane and makes me embarassed to be a resident of New York City. Please end the suffering of these gorgeous creatures so that I can be proud to say I am a native New Yorker

    • It is shameful that a city which prides itself on being progressive still allows and promotes animal ABUSE. This is an archaic practice that should have been outlawed a century ago.

    • There are a lot of cruelties going on behind the scenes these days: parrots being bred in peoples basements, dogs suffering terribly in scenic, rustic Amish barns, factory farmed animals, our living dead, suffering every moment of their lives. This, the pain of the carriage horses, is right up front--right there for us to see. Bred to run the fields, they walk, day after day, on unforgiving asphalt, harnessed, driven through traffic with the fumes in their faces--the dirt and grime and racket of the City constantly assaulting them. Sweating, freezing, through rain and gritty wind. If you think this isn't cruelty, harness yourself to a wagon and pull it, all day, through the streets of your town. Then, look with new eyes at the phlight of the carriage horses.

    • Tourists have no idea what conditions these animals live in and weather elements these poor horses endure...they envision romantic rides in the park and it's time we chose compassion over illusion. Thank you and please help eliminate this very sad tradition in our proud city.
