We, the undersigned, urge you to co-sponsor and/or support the Family Building Act of 2001 (HR 389) to amend the Public Health Service Act, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, and chapter 89 of title 5, United States Code, to require coverage for the treatment of infertility.

In an excerpt from the bill, Congress makes the following findings:

(1) Infertility is a disease affecting more than 6,000,000 American women and men, about 10 percent of the reproductive age population.

(2) Recent improvements in therapy make pregnancy possible for more couples than in past years.

(3) The majority of group health plans do not provide coverage for infertility therapy.

(4) A fundamental part of the human experience is fulfilling the desire to reproduce.

The primary sponsor for this bill is Rep. Anthony D. Weiner, and was introduced 1/31/2001. There are currently 21 co-sponsors. The latest major action regarding this bill was a referral to the Subcommittee on Employer-Employee relations on 3/15/2001. The entire bill can be seen by going to http://thomas.loc.gov and entering HR 389 in the By Bill Number search field.

It is requested that, in addition to signing this petition, all signers should also contact your Representative. Signature totals will be emailed periodically to members of the House of Representatives.

    • Please sign this bill. My husband and I have had to put treatment on hold several times due to lack of funds. Our insurance covers nothing for infertility. You would be helping an enormous amount of people who have already struggled through so much!

    • Please, please support the Family Building Act of 2001 (Bill H.R. 389) The hurt and the pain of a infertile couple runs very deep and most people just can't imagine the pain. Thank you for your support.

    • I have suffered from IF for 11 years, financially I am drained, Its unfair that drug companies will pay for viagra, but not IF. Its a double standard to pay for sterilization, but not to fix a medical problem for reproduction. Its way past time for a goverment regulation on insurance to cover infertility. Its sad to think that if I ever have a child, the money i could spend on it,,,,,will still be paying for IF tx.

    • I have watched my wife raise my two children from a previous relationship. She is an excellent mother to my children, even more so than their biological. It hurts me to see her hurt night after night because of infertility troubles. I would love to stand beside my wife and have a child with her. Financally its almost impossible for us to get treatment. I agree that the insurance companies should cover the cost of infertility tx. It covers drug rehabilitation, and that is a problem brought on by the person itself,, I love you Babe, this is for you!
