Dear present students of Languages and past students of Languages,

This petition was made to let you know that the College has decided, by 2010/2011, to cut 60\% of the foreign languages classes that are at present offered to undergraduates here as part of their course.

This will mean there will be NO classes for credit at all in Japanese, Italian, Russian, and Arabic, while only the higher levels will be offered in Mandarin, French, German, and Spanish.

Below are the people who wish to help preserve the Languages Programme for future students.

- Knowing different languages is really essential and useful, especially with globalisation in today's world. Besides, this massive cutting of languages would severely deprive students who are really interested in learning a language (esp from scratch) of the chance to do so. This is especially so for students who wish to start learning a language at Level 1 but are unable to afford the cost of taking an evening class. I personally have taken Spanish Level 1 for credit and I have greatly benefited from the course. I really hope that future students of Imperial College will also get to enjoy this wonderful opportunity of being able to learn a language, even if they have no previous knowledge of the language, for credit and for free.
