We the signed members of this petition respectfully yet vehemently oppose the proposed construction of a 165 megawatt coal-fired power plant in Iloilo City, Philippines.

Research shows that Coal emits 29 percent more carbon per unit of energy than oil and 80 percent more than gas, adding that burning coal releases massive amounts of mercury and arsenic that are toxic to human health.

We ask you, honorable officials whom we have elected into office, to PLEASE reconsider your acts. As our President has said, "every nation, developed or developing, must assume the mantle of leadership and work to address the challenge of climate change.

It is a hypocrisy on your part to discuss sustainable energy solutions while encouraging investors to construct coal-fired plants. Coal is recognized by climate experts as a major contributor to destructive global warming.

We ASK that you abide by these goals with your actions, and utilize alternative sources of energy as a means to generate electricity. IT IS NOT THE ONLY WAY. Fulfill your duties by doing what is right. By forsaking our health and endangering our communities to gain financial equity and so-called "environmentally sound energy", you are risking our entire future.

    • We're simply creating another problem in our environment. Now that our planet is in peril, I can't afford to have another catastrophic, irrational and irresponsible way of solving power shortage by this means.

    • Coal is a stop gap measure to remedy a present problem at the expense of high future costs. Coal does not promote sustainable use of resources and the environment. If indeed coal is the answer, why don't we go nuclear instead? ;-)
