By signing this petition I request the Greek government to stop its plans to pass a Ministerial Decision on Land Use for Tourism. I believe it will be disastrous for this countrys landscape and environment.

The plan includes a number of provisions promoting the mass development of tourism facilities, including construction of hotels, holiday houses for sale, and other infrastructures that are not compatible with the character and carrying capacity of the Greek islands and other sensitive areas.

Tourism in Greece should be developed along the lines of environmental sustainability. A special effort should be made to protect the unique landscape, character and culture of the country, the birthplace of democracy, civilization, and mythology.

By signing this petition I request the Greek government to develop tourism in such a way that:

It protects and preserves the environment, culture, and special features of every part of Greece;

It values the many natural and cultural attributes of Greece and does not promote the development of an artificial environment;

It regulates construction vigorously instead of promoting extensive development of tourism facilities, thus altering the Greek landscape;

It maintains development at a substantial distance from beaches, protected areas, and areas of cultural interest;

It develops new forms of tourism that allow visitors to gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the country and its beauty: nature-oriented tourism, cultural tourism, diving, hiking, etc;

Develop special initiatives for restoring and reviving the vast cultural, popular, natural and architectural heritage of Greece. So far it has been abandoned and in many places, fallen to shambles.

The Greek government and tour operators should understand that we choose Greece for its islands and its mountains. If cementing the shores and the mountainsides are this governments priorties, we will have to change our destination!
