We the undersigned are putting this petition to Maria Eagle regarding the removal of the Steering Wheels Project based at Venture Point,Evans Road,Speke,Liverpool 24. *** On the 27th May 2005 ***

Steering Wheels is a Lifeline to many young boys and girls in Speke/Garston area

Steering Wheels is a motor project for young people between the ages of 13 and 24 based in Liverpool.

At current we provide a range of social education and leisure activities from vehicle related Courses to motor activities such as karts, grasstracking and trials bikes, as well as a range of educational programmes.

This project was set up in 1996, after a consultation with young people from the Speke Garston areas of Liverpool.

The Steering Wheels Project was set up after consultation with local young people in the areas of Speke and Garston, Liverpool. This is an area that suffers from high unemployment and low prospects.

Young people specifically asked for a motor project to enhance heir employment prospects and the use of their social and educational leisure time through motor related activities. Grasstrack car racing, Karting, Mini motor cycles, trials motorcycles and BSM pre driver safety courses are just some of the projects activities.

Our project has been established since September 1996 and in this time has shown itself to be very active within the community. This in turn has helped us build up very good relationships with youth agencies both locally and across merseyside.

In addition to supporting local young people, the project now extends support to education action zone (local secondary schools), the learning and developing skills project who assist young men and women to move towards training and employment

    • hi, i am the chairman of the prestatyn autograss cub . over the years, many youngsters from the steering wheels project have raced in our club. if you want to see what a difference this sort of project makes to them, you are more than welcome to come to our race track free of charge to see the determination and joy on their faces whether they come in first place or last - it makes little diffrence to them. it's all about taking part in our very friendly club. I strongly feel that to take the participation of this sport away from them after so many have put so much effort and time into it would be very detrimental. Please please do not take this away from them.

    • another disgusting let down from the powers that be in the city of liverpool to the local communities of Speke and Garston. No one seems to care about the people who benefit from such projects. Give them a voice for a change please.

    • I have been associated with Steeringwheels project for a number years, and am proud to have helped pioneer their excellent work in film and media. The centre has already had to adapt to moving home once in the last two years. Another move is potentially devastating to a crucial local youth resource. This must not be allowed to happen.

    • Growing up in Speke in the 60's 70' the business industry was booming. Jobs were plenty. Young people were able to leave school and gain employment. During the 80's that all changed. Businesses closed or left. The people of Speke were left to get on with things. Then they took it upon themselves to do something about it and help the young people. By providing projects like steering wheels young people have a chance to learn, gain new skills and increase their employment chances. Why try to fix something if it is not broken. Steering wheels is not an isolated project it is linked to other valuable projects that benefit young people. We are always hearing about the negative aspects of young people's behaviour. The young people who use steering wheels want to do something positive. So why take it away.

    • It can not be acceptable for a government Kwango to be directly impicated in the distruction of a Voluntay Sector Charity working sucessfully with children and young poeple in the Speke Garston area and would appar to be against the City Council's Uniary Development Plan.
