By signing the petition below, I acknowledge, affirm and endorse the following:

Whereas, the 1971 Jordan River Parkway Plan identified lands located along the Jordan River at 2200 North as public open space for flood control and the Jordan River Parkway; and,

Whereas, the Provo-Jordan River Parkway Authority acquired the lands identified in the 1971 Parkway Plan at 2200 North as public open space for flood control and the Jordan River Parkway; and,

Whereas, during the mid 1980s, the former Jordan River State Park site was flooded and inundated by rising waters from the Great Salt Lake; and,

Whereas, in 1990, the Utah Division of State Parks and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources did commission a study and design for a nature education center at the former Jordan River State Park; and,

Whereas, the Salt Lake County Shorelands Plan did identify and recommend the former Jordan River State Park as a future nature park and interpretive center; and,

Whereas, the Jordan River Natural Areas Forum recommended the former Jordan River State Park as a future nature park and interpretive center; and,

Whereas, the 2008 Blueprint Jordan River Vision recommends the former Jordan River State Park to be preserved as natural open space; and,

Whereas, Salt Lake City did adopt Resolution 13 of 2009, declaring the Citys support of the Blueprint Jordan River Vision and commitment to preserving open space along the Jordan River; and,

Whereas, the former Jordan River State Park has great ecological value and potential for wildlife habitat, nature-based education, and outdoor recreation; and,

Whereas, the former Jordan River State Park is located in the Jordan River Floodplain and is one of the last undeveloped and relatively large areas of wildlife habitat in the Salt Lake Valley; and,

Whereas, there are other publicly owned locations that have previously been studied and found to be suitable for a large soccer complex;

Therefore, We The Undersigned oppose the siting of the Regional Sports Complex along the Jordan River and recommend that the land previously known as the Jordan River State Park, which is located at, or near 2200 North between the Jordan River and I-215, should be preserved as natural open space and restored to as natural of a condition as possible; and also recommend that the proposed Regional Sports Complex should be relocated away from the Jordan River Floodplain Corridor and constructed at one of several alternative locations, including those locations previously considered by Salt Lake City and found to be suitable; and further recommend that the former Jordan River State Park site be developed as an urban nature park with an interpretive center as recommended in previous public plans.

    • We need to protect the Jordan River from development. Shame on Salt Lake City! This location is not appropriate for a sports complex. Let's move the sports complex to another location, restore this site with native plants and get a nature center going for the kids!

    • As someone who's been involved with this site since the floods of the 80's, a Nature Center here is so much more appropriate, and so much more valuable to the community, than a sports complex, that those who don't support the idea really don't understand the issue at all.

    • Please do the right thing and relocate this project. I am dismayed to see the mayor's comment that the location was commonly known by the public, which is false.

    • Our warming climate means less snow and more rain and this is not the time to compromise what little natural flood control this river and this valley have left. There are times when nature just needs to be left alone.

    • The proposed site for the Soccor Fields will greatly change the last significant agricultural environment of the city. This far north area of the city should be preserved and protected for the diversity our local environments. The Soccor fields would be better located at a more accessible site recycled from former use. Saving the proposed site as natural open space will enhance and preserve the dwindling agricultural environment that remains in our city.

    • the sports complex is a waste of scarce money. A nature park makes more sense, costs less, and can handle floods much better. Its what's been recommended and approved previously.

    • Salt Lake County citizens also enjoy the "natural" areas in the parkway. The parkway is a popular area for citizens to walk, run, bicycle and to view and learn about wildlife in natural settings. Salt Lake County citizens also enjoy playing soccer and should have facilities which are free and open for all citizens to use however, clashing interests of citizens only deprives citizens of their right to enjoy different pastimes and to the detriment not the enhancement of the quality of life. Therefore, I ask that you please reconsider consequences to all citizens when determining the placement of the sports complex. Thank you.

    • The proposed sports facility CAN be built elsewhere. The Jordan River and the ecosystem that depends up on it have no such alternative. That makes this an easy decision: move the sports complex somewhere else.
