Pit Bull Bashing on 96 Rock

On July 18, 2005, disc jockeys "Southside" Steve Rickman and Tim Rhodes of Atlanta's Classic Rock Station "96 Rock" made a series of derogatory and offensive statements about American Pit Bull Terriers and their owners. Pit bulls were patently labeled "vicious" and "untrustworthy" with no qualification for the traits of particular dogs, their training, or life circumstances. Moreover, this breed was said to have "locking" jaws, a statement which has been proven to be completely fictitious by breed experts such as Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia. Once a favorite family pet in the U.S. pit bulls have been the victims of irresponsible breeders and owners, and are now victimized by the media's prejudicial and inflammatory spin. Clearly, Southside and Rhodes have no problem trying to raise ratings by spreading vicious rumors about the many beloved pets of this historic breed. It looks like Southside and Rhodes are the ones who are untrustworthy - not the canines who have long served as man's best friend.





Pit Bull Community is a Georgia-based association of pit bull lovers and advocates and we demand an apology from Southside, Rhodes and 96 Rock which will be publicly aired at a pre-arranged time. Until then, we will encourage all Georgians who care about pit bulls, of which there are many, to boycott 96 Rock for its ignorance and lack of irresponsiblity.

    • This type of communication only serves to foster ill-will toward this breed. When these dogs are not bred and trained for fighting, they make a loving, loyal pet like any other dog. Give them a chance, get to know one!

    • i think thats crazy.. APBT's are only vicious if you make them that way.. irresponsible owners should be the ones being put to sleep and give the "vicious" dogs a good home..

    • Hello, from Texas. We own two APBT's. Our male will be 2, Oct. 9, and the female will be 1 in Nov. They are the most loving dogs that I, my family or my veterinarian have ever seen. Our vet says that he would be less apprehensive treating our dogs over a chow or dalmation, ANY DAY. Do your homework boys and don't speak before you know the FACTS!! We have a town close by, Port Neches has recently banned pits, and the news stations didn't find ANY attacks reported in that town. What's next? Are they going to raid our houses and take them? Over my dead body!!

    • american pitbull terriers are extremely mellow dogs. it is when they have owners that neglect them and beat them that they snap. pitbulls only have a bad reputation because when they do attack they are so powerfull that it causes serious damage. most attacks are from shephards and dalmations and poodles etc. etc.

    • we have 3 pit bull dogs and they are wonderful, loyal companions for our children, as well as protection against woulbe intruders. Our dogs are various ages, and have been as gental as any well raised dog.
