In 2001, John Silva, a 15 year old child in Florida, was convicted of First Degree Murder and sentenced to prison for the term of Life Without Parole.
Charging children as adults is WRONG, no matter what the circumstance.
To throw a CHILD in prison for their entire LIFE is a travesty.
All children deserve the chance to redeem themselves.
John, at the age of 15, was not physically capable of understanding the consequences of his actions.
He should have been held accountable as the CHILD that he was.
Please give John a chance at living a life outside of prison.

- Mandatory minimum sentencing of children is directly akin to state sanctioned child abuse. It is immoral and, in civilized society, should be criminal. Lazy politicians who supported the laws which allowed this to happen to John Silva and the prosecutor's office who decided to try him as an adult share equally in the slow destruction of a young person's life and are reminders of how incredibly cruel and unjust Floridas legal system has become. If you have children, keep them as far away from Florida as you can, it is a dangerous place.

- This is a barbaric practice. Florida should be ashamed of itself for leading the nation in incarcerating its children in adult prison. If John were a 35 year old man, I sincerely doubt that he would have received this harsh of a sentence. The USA has declared "open season" on children. In fact, the younger they are, they will receive the stiffest penalties. Is this really any way to handle crime? I don't think so.

- Florida's tradition of destroying children, both those who commit crimes and those who are innocent victims, continues. Until this barbaric practice ends, Florida will continue to be a dangerous place for children to live. Florida legislators, the DCF, Florida prosecutors and Florida judges are all guilty of state sanctioned child abuse. John Silva is but a small example of how Florida destroys kids, instead of recognizing that ALL children are deserving of rehabiliation and a chance at life.
