We, the undersigned, strongly oppose the issuance of permits to Exxon Mobil/Imperial Oil, Conoco Phillips and other corporations to transport massively oversized, road-obstructing industrial equipment on U.S. Highway 12.

These transports would degrade the intrinsic qualities of the Northwest Passage Scenic Byway and All-American Road; impede the travel of locals and visitors for pleasure, recreation, business, and emergencies; potentially damage the road and bridges and accrue costs to American taxpayers; pose a serious threat to a world-class fishery and wildlife corridor; and severely impact the single growing industry of the U.S. 12 corridor: travel/tourism.

Therefore, we the undersigned petition the Idaho Transportation Department and Governor Otter to deny permits for the transport of any and all such massively oversized, road-obstructing loads.

    • The treasures of Montana and Idaho are beautiful wild areas. This will last a very long time if well cared for and preserved. Why risk an absolutely beautiful area for a measly few million dollars - look to the future. Canada has a very long coastline where this massive equipment can be landed and then hauled overland. Not in the sacredness of our beautiful lands.

    • There are only two things we need - more than jobs, more than a money...air to breathe and clean water to drink.

    • If this petition fails are there any plans to mobilize a massive citizen blockade of U.S.12? If there is one yopu can count on me to be there.

    • Too risky to a scenic byway of the US and way too narrow for the load...one mistake and these huge things go into the Lochsa

    • Another fine example of privatizing the profits while socializing the cost.

    • It is entirely inappropriate to transport massive equipment over a pristine wilderness highway. It will only take one bridge to collapse to close the highway for an extended period of time with the cost born by the taxpayers. This cannot be considered a serious effort on the part of ITD.

    • How can Otter possibly support this plan that does nothing good for his state or the people who live here? Shame on you Butch, thats pathetic.

    • This area, one of the most beautiful in the Northwest, must be saved for the citizens of the U.S., not destroyed by corporate interests from a foreign country.

    • Please do not let the short term $ blind you to the real damage and loss of "senic value " that tourists for generations to come will miss if the road is widenened and pull outs are built. It is not worth the price we will pay in lost beauty! Tourists do spend a lot of money in Montana!

    • I am concerned about the funding of the road maintenance long-term. Idaho has high costs every year to fix winter-damage on their pavement and the current budget of the state does not allow for higher expense. Typically once a road is widened it is necessary for the public to maintain it. I am opposed to fund maintenance of a widened highway 12.

    • Totally unnecessary. They want to move stuff this way over Idaho's roads to save a few bux. At US inconvenience. Best route would be via Port of Vancouver BC and on to Alberta from there. Why must we accept their crass cheapness with the consequent damage to our wonderful back roads. Idaho DOT: you need to kill this thing.

    • My guess is the only reason that they have chose this route is because they were denied access to WA state roads and Canada Highways. They should have used Canadian Steel fabricators. Deny Permits.
