In April 2004 Police Officer James Griner became a K-9 Officer and was assigned his K-9, Vinnie (age 2). Vinnie moved into Officer Griners home and lived among him and his family through the duration of his duty. Shortly thereafter Officer Griner was promoted to a supervisory position. The rules stated that a supervisor was not allowed to have a specialty, yet they promised him that he would continue to be Vinnies handler regardless of the rules. Over the past 5+ years James and Vinnie have been inseparable and always served their duty with honor, respect and integrity. Last week, Sgt Griner was alerted to the fact that Vinnie would be stripped from him and kenneled until reassignment with another officer who has yet to be hired/named/trained. Therefore Vinnie will be sitting in a kennel for an unknown amount of time with no interaction with his former handler, Sgt Griner.
Please sign this petition that will be forwarded to Chief Lyons of the Garden City Police Department, as well as the Garden City, City Council. Help me convince Chief Lyons that not only is this unfair treatment to Vinnie but also to Sgt. Griner. Lets get Vinnie back with his handler, Sgt. James T. Griner.
Lets make a difference and get these partners back together!

- Either way the dog is going to have seperation anxiety. Why not allow the dog to be cared for by someone who loves him until the new partner comes along?

- I have known the Griner family since Melissa Griner and I were in 2nd grade.Vinnie is such an important part of their family. He is Jim's shadow.Vinnie is so attached to Jim that he requires medication to soothe his separation anxiety whenever they have to be apart. Please do not allow this to happen to two of Garden City's finest.

- My dad (a former K-9) handler had this exact situation happen to him. It was all politics and his supervisors realized their error soon thereafter. It's just not fair and it affects more than just one person. You're not only taking a Jim's partner away from him, you're taking a beloved family member from the rest of the family. Please reconsider what's best for the dog and for the Griner family. You're number one asset is your employees, keep them happy and your job becomes so much easier.

- If Vinnie cannot stay with Jim then he should be with him until Vinnie has been reassigned and not placed in a kennel.

- Please put asside the red-tape of this conflict in police protocol to reunite an obvious working partnership. Anyone who has knowledge in the animal training field knows that the bond between handlers and their animal partners is critical to that animals performanance. To allow this dog to sit idle in a kennel is also a waste of tax payers money when he can be at work serving the purpose he was trained for.

- Would you take a seeing-eye dog from their trainer/owner? What's the difference? It seems that this officer (Vinnie) has been with his owner since he was a pup. If Sgt Griner is still active in the police force, what is the reason for the reallocation? Doesn't make sense to me.

- I am 100\% behind Sgt. Griner on this. He is so very pivitol in everything that he has done for Garden City that some understanding and compassion should be exercised in this case and Sgt. Griners wishes should be met.
