We regard the proposal to reduce the number of posts in Classical Archaeology and Art at King's College London from four to three as an arbitrary and short-sighted measure that disregards the integral nature of the subject to the discipline of Classics as a whole. We do not accept the rationale of the restructuring, nor the manner in which decisions have thus far been made, including the ambiguity of the consultation process and the lack of proposed alternatives to redundancy. The dismissal of one member of staff and their subject specialism will cause irreparable damage to the intellectual wellbeing and reputation of the Classics Department and will have grave implications far beyond the University. We urge the Executive of Kings College London to reconsider this proposal and retain all four posts in Classical Archaeology and Art.

- This is one of the most shocking assaults on the Humanities in my experience in Higher Education, and that it should be internally directed by one of the country's most distinguished universities makes its Stalinist brutality that much more apalling.

- The Classical Archaeology and Art staff are outstanding in terms of scholarship, teaching and pastoral care. To lose any of them would be a grave loss to the resources and reputation of King's.
