We regard the proposal to reduce the number of posts in Classical Archaeology and Art at King's College London from four to three as an arbitrary and short-sighted measure that disregards the integral nature of the subject to the discipline of Classics as a whole. We do not accept the rationale of the restructuring, nor the manner in which decisions have thus far been made, including the ambiguity of the consultation process and the lack of proposed alternatives to redundancy. The dismissal of one member of staff and their subject specialism will cause irreparable damage to the intellectual wellbeing and reputation of the Classics Department and will have grave implications far beyond the University. We urge the Executive of Kings College London to reconsider this proposal and retain all four posts in Classical Archaeology and Art.

    • An incredibly short sighted and ignorant position for a University to take; bean-counting at its very worst!

    • Kings has always been an outstanding contributor to the arts, and particularly Classics. Given the overall lack of investment in this coutry it would be a travesty for specialisms such as Classical Archeology to be cut

    • At a time when archaeologists are among the most interdisciplinary of academicians (broadly bridging the humanities and the natural and social sciences, in addition, now also, to international relations and law), surely their value and number should be highlighted and increased rather than diminished.
