We regard the proposal to reduce the number of posts in Classical Archaeology and Art at King's College London from four to three as an arbitrary and short-sighted measure that disregards the integral nature of the subject to the discipline of Classics as a whole. We do not accept the rationale of the restructuring, nor the manner in which decisions have thus far been made, including the ambiguity of the consultation process and the lack of proposed alternatives to redundancy. The dismissal of one member of staff and their subject specialism will cause irreparable damage to the intellectual wellbeing and reputation of the Classics Department and will have grave implications far beyond the University. We urge the Executive of Kings College London to reconsider this proposal and retain all four posts in Classical Archaeology and Art.

    • Highly specialized topics in the humanities are marginal, unpopular. So what. Shame on you.

    • I feel sadened to think that the department that gave me so much knowledge, pleasure and provided me with tools to continue my life after King's is under this serious and horrific situation. This step should be thought through thoroughly before any decissions are made and we should all be responsible for keeping our department alive, not only for the sake and welfare of those there presently but also for its preservation for future generations.

    • Although our institution is fairly small and far away (near Seattle, Washington, USA) we have two students currently enrolled in graduate programs at KCL who have graduated from Classics here at PLU. These kinds of cuts really call into question KCL's commitments to its heritage, its history, and to its programs going forward. It also calls into question whether one should be preparing students to go there. You have such a rich heritage and reputation along with your programs in CLassical Archeology and Art. A "brand," to use a contemporary obsession, that is distinct and capitalized. Why squander it?
