We regard the proposal to reduce the number of posts in Classical Archaeology and Art at King's College London from four to three as an arbitrary and short-sighted measure that disregards the integral nature of the subject to the discipline of Classics as a whole. We do not accept the rationale of the restructuring, nor the manner in which decisions have thus far been made, including the ambiguity of the consultation process and the lack of proposed alternatives to redundancy. The dismissal of one member of staff and their subject specialism will cause irreparable damage to the intellectual wellbeing and reputation of the Classics Department and will have grave implications far beyond the University. We urge the Executive of Kings College London to reconsider this proposal and retain all four posts in Classical Archaeology and Art.

- Classical Studies are dying on purpose in order to create a "new" Europe without any links to its Greco-Roman past. Don't you think that we don't know what you are up to.

- I am an English graduate, now training to be an actor and as such have an interest in arts and humanities. I feel that these cuts show a worrying trend away from funding in these areas, areas which I feel are important to society as a whole.

- This move would be highly damaging to the both the reality and the reputation of the KCL Classics Department as a whole and cause further damage to a department which is already in need of bolstering. Classical Archaeology is a wide reaching subject and requires the breadth of specialist knowledge which currently ensures that King's is so highly regarded in this field. To lose a quarter of the specialist knowledge and teaching available to students of not only Classical Archaeology but also Classics, Classical Studies, History, Byzantine and Modern Greek, and Latin and English would reduce the quality of teaching and the respect for King's College London degrees.

- The cuts taking place in classics departments worldwide is unfortunate, and detrimental to the future of the institutions themselves, as well as the field of classical studies.

- Unacceptable victimization of a sub-discipline vital to the study of Classics and vital also to the study of Visual Culture, an area KCL claims to want to support and promote

- Retrograde move: Save CAAF. Is Cambridge next, what with the discussions considering the future of Arch & Anth? Unite or fall. These cuts are not the beginning, but they are the beginning of the end of university courses....
