We, the undersigned, ask that Sun Microsystems release the Lighthouse Applications, which were once available for NeXTSTEP and OPENSTEP, as free software under any license conformant with the Free Software Definition as defined at http://www.fsf.org/philosophy/free-sw.html. A list of conformant licenses is available at http://www.fsf.org/licenses/license-list.html.
These applications are not adding to Sun Microsystems' bottom line as they are no longer available for sale anywhere. Additionally, they would provide a valuable starting point for development of similar productivity applications on Mac OS X and on other OpenStep compliant systems.
Releasing these applications as free software would increase competition, offer the end-user more choices, and would also increase Sun's visibility in these areas by expanding on it's list of open source/free software products (currently comprised only of the OpenOffice suite).
We hope that Sun Microsystems will see fit to grant this small request.

- These were useful applications that should be either still supported or released as freeware.

- SUN intиgre des logiciels GNU dans son OS Solaris (depuis sunOS 5.8: perl, bash, emacs, ....). L'ouverture des sources de Lighthouse design monterait la rйelle volontй de SUN de supporter l'opensource.

- The Lighthouse Design suite of Applications was outstanding for its day. I believe the owners of the source code should exercise their responsibility to computer programming history, so that future generations may appreciate the high quality that Lighthouse Designs had achieved.

- Doing this helps Java as well since Openstep/OSX and Gnustep are among the few frameworks that allow java to look and feel "native"

- It does little good to let code stagnate. Free the code and see what good can come of it!

- Why letting good softwares take dust when they could be used by so many people?

- It would be wonderful if Sun would offer the source code for these fine OpenStep applications to the community in order to build more support for Objective-C and the OpenStep APIs, as well as to fill gaps in the array of available applications for GNUstep and Mac OS X.

- Absolutely. I was involved with NS/OS back in the old days of yonder... And having a hard time letting go of the past, and also a realist that what we have today basically sucks, and what Lighthouse produced was great and useful, do let the sources into the OpenSource community. They would be GREATLY appreciated by all. The stuff that legends are made of must come to fruition and Xanadu will live again (mwhahahahah)

- Quantrix still is by far the best spreadsheet application that I have ever used. If SUN released the applications as free software, Quantrix could be brought back to life!!!
