We the undersigned note that lambeth spends 4.6 million a year on consultants in Regeneration and Housing alone.

We do not believe that it is good value for money for consultants to be used for years at a time. Consultants and "interim" managers do not have a long term commitment to Lambeth.

We support the police agreed at UNISON's Annual Meeting that the Union should not negotiate with consultants but with established Council employees.

We call upon the Council to ensure that they are represented at meetings with the trade unions by established employees.

    • The cases of consultants use in the housing Directorate is Legion and wide spread - and most times without much justification and easy- a review of this is highly needed as it is wasteful and undermining of Council's permanent staff

    • Many senior consultants cost 3 times as much as permanent staff and this is sapping the financial resources (i.e. HRA) of the Housing Department

    • IS IT ALWAYS NECESSARY TO EMPLOY CONSULTANTS WHEN SOMETIMES THERE MAY BE LAMBETH EMPLOYEES WHO HAVE THE NECESSARY SKILLS TO UNDERTAKE WHATEVER TASK IS REQUIRED? IT SEEMS TO ME THAT SO OFTEN, THE TALENT 'IN HOUSE' IS OVERLOOKED. IT'S ALMOST AS THOUGH SENIOR MANAGEMENT ARE RELUCTANT TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF MAKING A DECISION THEMSELVES AND FEEL THAT EMPLOYING THE SERVICES OF A CONSULTANT WILL RELIEVE THEM OF THAT BURDEN. WHAT DO THEY ALL DO? JUDGING BY WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN BENEFITS OVER THE PAST 6 - 7 YEARS, NOT MUCH AND WHAT'S THE COST BEEN? WE WILL NEVER KNOW. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT ONCE THESE CONSULTANTS HAVE WORKED THEIR WAY INTO THE SYSTEM AND GRATIFIED THEMSELVES WITH MANAGEMENT THEY ARE MADE. DERRICK ANDERSON TALKS OF VALUE FOR MONEY. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT REVIEWING THE NEDD AND ROLE OF CONSULTANTS SHOULD BE ONE OF THE IMPORTANT ISSUES IN THAT PROCESS.
