We request that the President's Back to School speech on personal responsibility be shown in a school assembly at each of the Lake Mills public schools during the week of Sept. 8th. We feel this historic address strongly echoes and supports our school's mission statement, and viewing it in this setting would help motivate our students at the start of the school year.

    • It should be everyone's goal to keep kids in school. I'm glad President Obama is using his personal story to demonstrate that success is achievable to kids who have a harder hill to climb in life. There is nothing at all controversial about this message. I just wish more people were reinforcing it because if they did, more children would grow up to have the skills they need to succeed as adults.

    • Our President is the emodiment of what hard work and a good education can accomplish. His talk should have a very positive effect on your students.

    • Many presidents in the past, including republican ones, have addressed our children in their speeches in order to encourage them to continue to seek knowledge and education and to ask questions. Why wouldn't a parent want their children to hear this important message, since they (the children) will inevitably become adults who help shape their reality around them? Of course, any well-intended parent would want their children to be equipped with all the critical thinking skills and knowledge necessary for them to make the best decisions for themselves and for others surrounding them!

    • It is a disgrace to the school district that this is even an issue. Past presidents have been able to address our youth in this manner without argument and I can only guess as to why this has become an issue now.

    • It is truly sad that the LMASD is deciding to start the school year by teaching our children to ignore those in authority. If we show them that it is OK to disrespect the President and thereby the Presidency, should we be at all surprised when they show no respect for their teachers, parents, etc.? I did not vote for Obama, but he is the President of my country and the District's failure to show this speech, which I have read, is an outrage.

    • As a person of color in this town, you are showing me your indifference to people like myself. I must say you are not living and setting a good example for the students and community by not standing up for justice and respect for all especially our president.
