Stop the Meadowlilly Wal Mart, build Loblaws

An Open Letter to Galen Weston of Loblaw Companies Ltd. to begin construction on the planned new Superstore at Highbury and Commissioners Road in London and help us in the fight against Wal-Mart.

Dear Mr. Weston,

As concerned citizens of London Ontario we respectfully ask you to commence construction on your new development adjacent to the Summerside Shopping Centre in London.

Over the past year we have been working to fight off an application made by Smart Centres to build a Wal Mart next to an Environmentally Significant Area, specifically Meadowlilly Woods accross from your proposed development. Not only do we fully support Loblaws and it's history of environmentally friendly activities we pledge to bring our business to you and NOT Wal Mart upon construction of your store.

The construction of your store may also help us stop the Wal Mart development. We have been made aware that Loblaw has helped communities fight off Wal MArt in the past and having your Superstore available may help City Council see that we DO NOT NEED a Wal Mart development as we have Loblaws on it's way.

Lastly, many of our concerened citizens have expressed that the South East corner of London is dramatically underserviced with only a run down Food Basics within 10-15 minutes to shop at for gorceries and other essentials. Your construction of this store will satisfy a long standing need for these citizens abnd we think you will find it may be the busiest store in the city.

Please strongly consider our request for your store when making decisions on the next one to build. There is tremendous profit potention as well as potential to stand up agains t Wal Mart.

    • I would definitely support Loblaws. I drive from Meadowilily Road South to Loblaws at Oxford and Gammage to shop now and it would be a lot more convenient to have one in our neighbourhood. I was disappointed to hear that Loblaws was not going to build their store if Wal Mart is going across the road.

    • I am very diappointed that the Loblawa at Southdale & Montgomery Rd has closed in favour of Price Chopper. As a PC financial customer, I now have to drive for 20 minutes if I wish to make a deposit to my bank account as a result of that closure. A new Loblaws at Summerside would resolve that for me.

    • Superstore is definitely my preferred grocery store. I would love to have one closer to home. The fact that it might discourage Wal-Mart from setting up shop, thereby destroying some of the area's most beautiful green space, is an extra bonus! Any Wal-Mart super store that I have been to has been appaulingly bad at keeping their grocery checkouts clean and clutter-free. They would have to pay me to do my grocery shopping there...and even then I would rather go to a Loblaws brand store. The President's choice line of products are exceptional and you always carry a good supply of 'green' products. Please consider building your store in the Meadowlily area of London in the very near future.
