History and heritage have long been important parts of the fire service. Antique equipment and trucks are prized by communities for what they are, a representation of that city's roots.

In 1939, the City of Mt. Vernon purchased a brand new fire engine on a Diamond T chassis. The truck, made by Central Fire Corporation out of St. Louis, MO was state of the art at the time. The truck served for many years saving lives and property in Mt. Vernon. The truck was eventually retired and placed into storage.

Recently, the City has decided the list the truck for auction on December 12, 2009. Should this happen, this valuable piece of local history could be lost forever. Future generations would never have a chance to see what life in Mt. Vernon was like so many years ago. A better solution would be build a mini fire museum to display the truck proudly to the public. This has the potential to be a no-cost proposal to the City.

Please join us in our fight and sign our petition to keep the 1939 Diamond T fire engine in Mt. Vernon, where it belongs.

    • I have listened to my son speak of a truck that he always enjoyed working with "M-8". The city saw the need to auction it. Don't let another valuable piece of Mt. Vernon Fire Dept's. history go. Save their past for their future.

    • To sell a part of Mt. Vernon history would be a big mistake. Maybe it doesn't mean much to some, but fire department members relish the past. Keep the truck!

    • I think the history behind the fire service in Mt. Vernon is a proud history and saving unique pieces of that history are a very positive thing for us to strive for in our community. It appears that allowing our history to be preserved through efforts starting with saving this truck are a great first step in helping to honor the fire service and all who have served.

    • Im a big person of preserving history. I have heard the story about this fire truck and i believe it represents not only the past heros of the mt. vernon fire department but the current ones as well. Getting rid of this truck would be like forgetting the firefighters in the past that worked for mt. vernon and risked their lives to help others. Keep this truck and the long history behind it.
