End Daylight Saving Time in Manitoba!

The annual tradition of Springing Forward and Falling Back clocks was first initiated in 1915, and widely adopted in North America in 1966. In 2007, the schedule was changed to start the time change three weeks early in spring and extend it by two weeks in the fall.

The idea of implementing the time change was to save energy by having more daylight in the evening as people aren't expected to need their lights on as early in the evening.

This argument has been debated. A 2006 report from the U.S. Department of Energy anticipated electricity savings of four-tenths of a per cent per day of extended daylight savings time, totaling three one-hundredths of a per cent of annual electricity consumption.

More recently, studies now show the Daylight Savings Time may actually cost more energy. The idea is that Daylight Savings Time was implemented in a time when Air Conditioning was a luxury that few homes had. Today, Air Conditioning is very common place in the North American home. With Daylight Savings Time moving the daylight forward, there is an increase of electricity consumption because home owners are cooling their homes longer into the night.

In addition to the neglible/non-existent cost savings, Daylight Savings Times changes are more likely to cause accidents.

For all of these reasons, we should eliminate Daylight Savings Time in Manitoba. Please sign this petition so that we can forward it to our Members in the Manitoba Legislative. Thank you!

    • The negative psychological impact certainly costs more than the 'savings', if any

    • Winter days are a write off already as it is dark before we get to work and dark again before we leave work. Keep the clocks as they are now...make March 8, 2009 the LAST time we have to change our clocks and preserve our internal clocks.

    • I cannot stand daylight savings time, going to work in the dark then coming back in the dark is bad for morale. Let it be dark till 0900hrs who cares as long as we have some sort of sunshine on the way home. It also makes it harder on outdoorsmen, we have to get up an hour earlier to go hunting or fishing. I like to spend time outside with my kids, it' s kind of hard to do when it' s dark out before I even get home. Daylight saving time does not help us in any way I really hope someday we won' t have to adjust our clocks anymore.
