The Mommies Network (www.themommiesnetwork.org) runs a network of online discussion forums that extend across the United States and into Canada. The focus of the Mommies Network is to connect local mothers through restricted, local online discussion forum communities.
The Mommies Network sites place an image beneath every username in every post to indicate how many posts a member has made. This image changes from time to time. One of the images in regular rotation is that of a baby's bottle. The more posts a member makes, the more bottles that appear under that member's name.
Whereas many mothers never make use of baby bottles;
Whereas many mothers feel that a row of baby bottles beneath her name is not appropriate;
Whereas there are many alternative icons to use instead of baby bottles;
Whereas breastfeeding is not represented by any of the images in regular rotation;
Whereas the images of baby bottles can be construed to be glamorizing of bottle-feeding and promoting a certain method of infant feeding;
Whereas using a bottle as a symbol of motherhood or babyhood reinforces the mistaken cultural idea that all babies need bottles;
Whereas mothers who wish to connect to other mothers in their community should not be made to feel uncomfortable by an unnecessarily controversial symbol being placed under their name;
THEREFORE, we, the undersigned, do petition The Mommies Network to remove the baby bottle from the rotation of images to appear under members' usernames.

- I am a member of Alamance Mommies (NC) where I have complained about this issue before. My husband and I created some alternative rank icons which I have seen in the rotation now. I have not seen the bottles on our site for several months now. :)

- I am personally offended by the bottles- I'm a breastfeeding momma who has never used bottles and would appreciate to see something else, or at least non-formula promoting!

- Lets go in together and fund a billboard of a mother breastfeeding. That would get a few looks I'm certain.

- Having exclusively breastfed my 3 oldest children until 18 months and currently breastfeeding my 4 month old, I find baby bottles to be not inclusive of my choice of mothering.

- Wouldn't want to be a member knowing about the bottles thing. I'd prefer my membership in a forum about motherhood not be defined by something as trivial but controversial as bottles.

- my two children have never had a bottle. It isn't a part of every babies experience. please find a symbol that is more universal.

- Sorry, out of my nine babies I only breast fed one. None of my children follow the norms when it comes to the negatives associated with bottle feeding. The one breastfed...has terrible allergies! Go figure. However, why would I want to be associated with baby bottles just because I am a mother. I represent so much more than an arificial nipple!!

- As an IBCLC, and nursing mom (retired) I feel there are more oppropriate images of motherhood than baby bottles. Many mothers never use a baby bottle at all, and feel strongly about being connect with them in any way.
