We congratulate you on your election victory.
We are inspired by your call to U.S. citizens to serve the nation, and are especially excited by your often repeated pledge to double the Peace Corps by the 50th anniversary in 2011.
We sign this petition to express our strong support for a bigger, better and bolder Peace Corps. The Peace Corps can and should be at the foundation of your administration's renewed commitment to reach out to other nations in the very best traditions of the American people - cooperation, friendship, cross-cultural understanding and positive engagement designed to improve the human condition for millions of individuals around the world.
We look forward to working with you in achieving your goals for the Peace Corps.

- Peace Corps makes such a difference in the lives of so many - the volunteers, the people the volunteers work with abroad, and the volunteers' families and communities when we return. A spirit of service, understanding, and respect is fostered that lasts a lifetime, both in the US and in our countries of service.

- As a returned Peace Corps Volunteer, inspired in 1961 by President John Kennedy, I encourage you to use your office to inspire new volunteers to serve our country and assist others through service. Peace Corps service builds bridges, creates understanding among countries and within the volunteers who return with new wisdom to the U.S.

- The Peace Corps should be expanded. It provides great benefit to the US and the world for a minimal cost. The US military, on the other hand, must not only be brought home from Iraq and Afghanistan, but must be significantly reduced in size and expense. We must no longer act as an empire, sending our military into all the world. We must work with all people to solve world problems diplomatically and peacefully.

- As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, I can undoubtedly say that an expanded Peace Corps would do uncalculable repair to our country's somewhat dismal world image. Volunteers and those they live, serve and work with on a daily basis help to improve our country in so many ways and for such long periods of time in the future. It truly is one of the program's of the century, offereing opportunity to everyone touched by it, volunteers, family, friends and community, and equally so, the country's people who so graciously invite us to share their lives with them to work together.

- As a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer who proudly served in Benin, I honor the three goals of Peace Corps: helping meet the development needs of the host country; sharing American values with host country nationals; and bringing Benin's values "home" to share with my fellow Americans. Please make Peace Corps' mission the cornerstone of your international development policies so others may know these joys as well.

- Service in Peace Corps was a life changer as my husband and I learned to look at the US through others' eyes. That was over 30 years ago and we are hopeful that future US generations will have this opportunity to learn and serve.

- I was in the Peace Corps in Iran in the 1960s, an experience that helped define my worldview. The Iranian people love America. President-elect Obama, please make peace between the US and all other countries! Establish a Department of Peace and increase the Peace Corps.

- I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nigeria in 1962. One saw three pictures on the wall of the smallest hut--Queen Elizabeth, the Premier of the Eastern Region, and JFK. Barack Obama will replace JFK and America will return to place of respect in the world.
