Holy Father, we believe that now is time to open the priesthood to married men.

Nearly half the worlds parishes and missions have no resident priest, and many parishes are closing because of the priest shortage. Allowing married men to join their celibate brothers in ordained ministry will provide additional millions of Catholics access to the Mass and the sacraments.

Making this extraordinary change now will demonstrate that Church leaders listen to the sensus fidelium (the Spirit-inspired beliefs of the faithful). It will demonstrate that the Church can respond boldly to one of the major challenges that we, the people of God, face together. It will provide much needed hope to many Catholics who feel a deep sense of betrayal and alienation because of the scandal of clergy sex abuse of children and its coverup by many church officials.

Holy Father, in addition to providing these major benefits, acting courageously now to open the priesthood to married men will also add a significant and historic legacy to your pontificate.

    • Take celibacy away and give us a priesthood we can truely trust and rely on. This is not possible with forcing catholic priest to live celibate and have priests of other churches that are married ordained to the priesthood without them having to deprive their wives and children.

    • whereas the reasons/benefits cited in the petition might be said to be 'earthly' ones the truth is for me we should allow married priests because I feel it is God's will and clearly the Spirit is already acting with the few married priests we already have-the hierachy's 'job' is to bring about God's Will not its own, this ought to be paramount in the mind of the Church.

    • I was recently married. I couldn;t belieev how busy our priest was. Such a kind and wonderful man who is at an age when he should be contemplating retirement, but it is not possible as he has no one to hand over to. It is not fair to him, and I wish there was something I could do to assist. I think allowing married priests may increase the number of priests and may provide assistance to many of the priests I know and admire.

    • Many priests in communion with the see of Rome are allowed to marry. It is only those of the 'Latin' rite who are not (and even with these there are exceptions). There is no sound doctrinal basis for compulsory celibacy of the clergy. Denial of the mass and holy communion to millions of people is a grave wrong.

    • I myself am considering the priesthood. I would love to serve God and his church, but i am also a man who is in love! Why must I give up my love for a woman and a future family? It doesn't seem right and it is no where in the bible that a priest must remain celibate.
