We are concerned that the failure to rebuild the pedestrian and bicycle bridge over highway 101 at Ringwood Avenue after its removal by Caltrans would negatively impact the entire Menlo Park community in at least three ways.
1. It would add hardship to the morning commute of underprivileged students in the process of bettering their lives through education. Already, these students are traveling miles by foot or bike in the morning to help attain the American dream. Adding to this commute or making it more dangerous by forcing them to use the busy Willow or Marsh crossings could dissuade them from attending Menlo Atherton Highschool. This could constitute re-segregation and is unfair.
2. It would decrease the attractiveness of commuting by bike or foot for residents on both sides of the bridge. This is not compatible with the bicycle-friendly community Menlo Park strives to foster.
3. Delays could cost us the Caltrans funding for the project. This project is already scheduled, and would be an important economic stimulus to the local community.

- This is neither the time, nor the place to impact bicycle-commuting options. Have you not heard that 1in 5 children below the age of 12 have weight-associated health problems ?

- Let's keep local economy strong and continue with the build. We need to encourage sustainable transit options; closing this bridge sends us backwards in time.

- In this economy, and our concern for smaller carbon footprint. It seems only logical and right to rebuild this bridge. Is there no common sense any more?

- This bridge is a critical access route to school for hundreds of Menlo Park students, it also serves as a vital artery between neighborhoods.

- Many people take their bikes over this bridge for work. Willow and Marsh are unsafe for bikers and this is the only safe option.

- As a teacher who commutes daily over the bridge by bicycle from the CalTrain station on the west side, I see the need for the bridge for commuters of all ages who choose to travel without the use of a car whether it be for economic, environmental, or health reasons, and the renovation of "the catwalk" as we call it in the neighborhood, is essential not only for those of us who use it for our daily commutes, but as a means to both literally and figuratively bring together the increasingly segregated worlds on either side of 101. Intentional or not, the freeway that cuts off eastern Menlo Park from the rest of the city is a racial and cultural divide, and this small path stretching over the roar and exhaust of the freeway that segregates our community should be restored not only as a necessary safety precaution for carbon-free commuters choosing a free and healthy means of travel, but also as a symbolic gesture on the part of the city of Menlo Park. Please feel free to contact me at Beechwood School to share

- I fully support building the infrastructure to facilitate bicycle riding. 4th point of reason for building the bridge to think about: More bikes on the road = less smog in the air.
