Call to Action:
Support local independent retailers of wine and spirits, local wineries, and beverage industry salespeople.

We must act now before the Beverages and More! chain is allowed to open its 82nd store here in our local area, thus moving us one giant step closer to the faceless, cookie-cutter type of community we all want to avoid.

We, the undersigned, urge the City Council to appeal the Planning Commissions recent decision to allow a Beverages and More! store at 1820 41st Avenue in Capitola. The people of Capitola must have an opportunity to speak out about this threat to the unique character of our community. We and many others like us treasure the fact that the City of Capitola has a number of independently owned and operated wine and spirits retailers, who maintain an important relationship with local wineries. We prefer to give our business to our many local independent merchants, knowing this in turn supports our local wineries and beverage salespeople, which ultimately benefits the entire community.

Capitola has a long tradition of keeping it local, supporting the businesses who personally and proudly contribute to the quality of life we all enjoy here. We need your help in our campaign to keep it local please SIGN THIS PETITION! and then forward it to any and all people who care about preserving the unique character of our community and protecting our local economy.

    • Capitola is not a bedroom community, it's a tourist community...tourists don't come to visit big box stores, they come to spend there $$ in small, quaint local businesses. These many small businesses pay the exact same sales tax rate as a big box store, so having the big box store WILL NOT increase tax revenue or provide great selection or service. Just the opposite will happen...the tourism trade of this presently quaint community will be lost and the $$ that the tourists bring in will be lost as well...and it won't come back, it will go else where. NOW IS THE TIME TO BE SMART NOT SHORT SIGHTED!!

    • I hope the Capitola council considers some of the drawbacks from neighboring Santa Cruz, where corporate business has caused the smaller, established business from the area.

    • Progress? At some point we have to figure out, as a culture, that everything does not belong in a box-Wal-Mart, Home Depot or Beverages and more. This economically is a bad choice and quite frankly immoral on so many levels.

    • As a tourist, I have found Capitola to be an inviting, quaint town with many unique small businesses. PLEASE keep it that way -- DO NOT allow Bev-Mo to operate in Capitola!!

    • Give us a break! No more box stores on 41st Avenue. The traffic is insane as it is.

    • We need unique local businesses in order to be known as a special destination. Do you think Solvang, los Olivos, Sausalito or Mill Valley want a bunch of chain stores driving out locally owned businesses?

    • In addition to that which has already been stated, their wines aren't so great either, IMHO. It's a lose, lose.

    • Capitola has a unique charm that should not be destroyed by allowing this sort of 'big box' retail liquor store to devalue the area. This kind of faceless corporate store will make the neighborhood become generic, like just any other suburban strip mall. Please save the local flavor.

    • I strongly feel that having a BevMo on 41st or anywhere in Capitola would be a major blow to local businesses, many of which have faithfully served this community for decades in some cases. KEEP BEVMO OUT!

    • Your council should adhere to the restrictions of the number of alcohol and liquor stores in this area, as well as supporting the present stores which strive to service the area in an upscale manner. Why put those limitations on areas if they aren't followed?
