This petition requests a special Metro service route between Enumclaw and Black Diamond be created on weekday evenings to provide transportation for Enumclaw School District middle school and high school students participating in after-school programs.
No after-school activity bus is provided by the Enumclaw School District. Students living in the north half of the school district must undertake significant travel to reach their schools. This special Metro service route will increase participation in after school programs and access to community services.
This petition will gage community support and estimate the number of riders who would make use of after-school service on a daily basis. The fare for a youth riding Metro is 75 cents.
This special Metro service route shall be referred to as the North Enumclaw School District Evening Bus or NESDE Bus. The NESDE Bus would consist of a single (1) half circuit of the normal Metro 912 bus route on weekday evenings (M-F), plus one additional stop along the route.
The additional stop at Thunder Mountain Middle School (TMMS) during this half circuit is the only place along the current 912 route that a Metro bus does not already make planned stops.
The optimum NESDE schedule would provide pick up to students from Thunder Mountain Middle School (TMMS) after sports and clubs conclude at 5:00 PM. Bus arrival at TMMS would be at approximately 5:10 PM. The NESDE Bus can use the school bus lanes on the south side of the school.
Enumclaw High School (EHS) sports and clubs conclude at various times. The EHS Athletic Director will arrange to have sports practices end in time for student athletes to be able to ride the NESDE Bus. The NESDE Bus should make a Metro route 912 stop at the City of Enumclaw Pool located next to EHS at 5:30 PM or shortly thereafter.
A revised Metro route 912 will provide benefits to multiple user groups.
EHS Swim Team practice ends at 4:30 PM. Mount Rainier Foothills Swim Team begins practice at 4:30 PM. High school students could ride Metro from the Enumclaw Pool. Rainier members could ride the bus to practice from as far away as Covington and Black Diamond.
Free after-school tutoring for students is available near the Griffin Ave. & Wells St. Metro Transfer Station. More students could take advantage of this program if public transportation was made available.
A revised Metro route 912 in response to this NESDE Bus petition would provide three additional bus connections from the Sounder Train (Auburn Station) to Black Diamond and Covington every weekday evening at 4:19 PM, 4:48 PM and 5:37 PM. No such connections now exist after 3:11 PM.
Please implement the NESDE Bus special service route or an alternative as soon as possible.
