We the citizens of Newmarket, Ontario, hereby petition the Town of Newmarket, the Region of York and/or the York Regional Police, and whoever else is responsible for the creation, enforcement, redaction and amendments concerning the "Noise Control By-law 2004-94";

We are petitioning for a "general exemption" for the playing of musical instruments.

Such an exemption (with an accompanying "general prohibiton" for playing at night or the early morning) would both allow the citizenship to express themselves while guarding the interests of citizens who require the peace and quiet the Noise Control By-law was set out to protect.

    • This by-law crushes entirely the freedom of creativity. Whether through music, art, writing or spoken word, Canadian's are entitled to freedom of speech. Artistic expression is without a doubt a method of communication.

    • Does the noise restriction also ban the noise made by the town's construction and reconstruction projects? Or perhaps the noise made by the hundreds/thousands who participate in the terry fox run, persechini run/walkathon, etc?

    • I guess that the town should have all aircraft fly around it and have all local dogs removed to an area where they can bark and annoy people legally. Any child yelling while playing indoors or out should also be fined. Oh ,and remove all sports cars, trucks and heavy equipment. Lets not forget controlling the local wheather so wind can't produce any whistling noises. Music is creative! This bylaw needs to be scrapped immediately!!

    • We should have the right to music. Or so called 'noise', as known by the unappreciative musically challenged!
