We are deeply concerned about reports of outside interference into the tenure and promotion case of Dr. Norman Finkelstein, and that as a result he may not be awarded tenure from DePaul University.

One such report is:
Harvard Law Professor Works to Disrupt Tenure Bid of Longtime Nemesis at DePaul U.

We value Dr. Finkelstein's scholarship, his public talks and debates,
and his well-argued, fact-based critiques of issues relating to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

In our opinion, his association with DePaul University has enhanced DePaul University's reputation.

We understand his department has recommended tenure. We will be troubled if Dr. Finkelstein is denied tenure and will be concerned about the integrity of the tenure process at DePaul University.

We support a fair tenure process for Dr. Finkelstein.

    • I have read Dr. Finkelstein's "Beyond Chutzpah." It was well researched, well presented, eminently readable; and it rightly depicted the despicable Dershowitz as the fraud I consider him to be -- to academe, to rational discourse, to an enlightened America. I have witnessed Dr. Finkelstein in interview and debate venues; he is articulate, engaging, and deeply knowledgeable; and I would want him as my professor any day. I have seen the screaming, insulting Dershowitz (whom I can only label an Israel-firster) in debates and have read his rants. His campaign to deny Dr. Finkelstein tenure is par for the Dershowitz course (remember reports of his lobbying Governor Schwarzenegger re "Beyond Chutzpah"?) and is utterly contemptible. I believe Dershowitz to be a boorish charlatan who should be terminated by Harvard. Please do the right thing by Dr. Norman Finkelstein and grant him the tenure he so deserves.

    • Norman Finkelstein is a bold and important scholar. He has made important contributions to both Middle Eastern Studies and Holocaust Analysis. As a Jew whose family suffered immensely in the Nazi Holocaust, I find Dr. Finkelstein's interpretation compelling. It honors the memory of the victims far more than the attempt to use this immense crime as a justification for oppressing other people. Dr. Finkelstein richly deserves tenure, and DePaul University should be honored to have him.

    • The interference by Dershowitz in the tenure process is an intolerable interference with the normal academic processes. The AAUP should censure Dershowitz for that interference, and Harvard should consider revoking his tenure!
