The CEO of the National Kidney Foundation Singapore (NKFS), T.T. Durai, has breached the trust of the people of Singapore and all others who donate to him. He has drawn a total salary of about S$1.8 million over the last 3 years, which averages out to S$600000 per year and this money comes from the donations of people, many of whom do not even earn that amount in 5 or even 10 years. In addition, he has been less than truthful with the public, lying time and again in court before withdrawing his statements.
The NKF has also played games to keep the truth from the public, with chairman Richard Yong telling the public that senior executives fly business class for long-haul flights. However, Durai told the court that he indeed flew first-class.

The above are only two examples of how the NKF has not dealt responsibly with the public. We, the undersigned, petition that the CEO of NKFS be removed from his position. Also, the NKFS must be made more accountable to the public, always showing how it acts in public interest, and publishing information that will allow the public to see exactly how much of their money goes to the needy and how much ends up being spent on expenses. Currently, expenses shown include the salary cost under 4 different categories, Direct Charitable Expenses, Operating/Administration Expenses, Fundraising activities and Public Relations. This is merely hiding the truth from the public who deserves to know. Until the NKFS shows that it is willing to be more responsible, we the undersigned suggest that potential donors think twice and donate to more deserving organizations such as the KDF, the Community Chest and the Salvation Army.

    • DURAI, the BOARD and whichever BIG SHOTS (who supposed to care for the citizens) who think that $600,000 is peanuts to them, PLEASE FIRST BEAR IN MIND that NKF is a NON-PROFIT organization. Yes, to you, that is peanuts because all of you earn more then that (through whatever means, be it ethical or unethically)! however, to those poor patients, and to those who donate to NKF, $600,000 is a sum that they may never see in their entire life. Yet, you set the most STRINGENT rules to decide which patient should get the subsidy and which patient should not, then WHO set the LENIENT/LUXURY rules for you that you are ENTITLED for the 12 MONTHS BONUS and OTHER BENEFITS? NKF should withdraw their self-claim as a charity organization. And MEDIACORP, please STOP BROADCASTING the so-called "charity show" and "charit advertisements" from now on as you are also one party that propagantiscally helping NKF to "EARN" such big reserve, at the expense of the patients and citizens.

    • NKF's expenditures should be made clear and published yearly. Salaries drawn by top managment should also be revealed. There is no such thing as "i do not wish to reveal" as they are living off the commoners' kind donation for the patients.

    • We are annoyed and flabagasted on how the public funds are being used. We thought that it is going to the charity without knowing that we are contributing to the luxury expenses of the CEO and may be more NKF executives. The public funds are hard earned monies, even if it may sound negligible to some . We have the right to know how the NKF funds are managed. NOTE: To those who think S$600K is peanuts, you are actually insulting the donors!!! Stop being so arrogant!!! If you are rich it may mean peanuts to you but not to the ordinary folks!!!!

    • Very disappointed! I pity one of our cleaner who earns only SGD900.00 per month and she contributed SGD50.00 every month through GIRO to NKF. All of us, including all artists local and overseas are all letting down by this finding. I will continue to contribute but I expect a transparent system put in place. No one in charity should be getting a hugh salary package and not 10 or 12 months bonus!

    • I have been very disappointed with the ways funds are managed. I believe NKF should be open if your mission is to help others, rather than to irresponsibly misused the funds people had scrimped and saved to donate. I request that all finacial proceeds and reports be released to public

    • Shame on those people.. they should step down immediately. Donation programmes are too frequent just because they have an insatiable hunger for donation monies for their own purposes. If the monies can be utilised properly, those poor people dun even have to pay the $300 a month - who wanted to have a burdensome kidney problems??

    • i share with most their sentiments...I would very much like to see that every cent and dollar of my donated money goes to the right people, if not all but at least 70-80% please... not to people who are not in need of it as much as the kidney patients.

    • This is a charity organisation. The priority should be set at helping the needy. The people in the organisation should have a passion in helping the needy rather than treating it as running a business.

    • I believe that the whole board of directors and patrons should step down in view of the fiasco. Based on the facts at hand, NKF is NOT a charity organisation.

    • My opinion leans to towards this petition however I do not think I have the full rights in requesting the resignation of the CEO. The public must understand that the NKF is an organisation with it's own structure and policies and although we can request for transparency to how donations are accounted for, these are not always synonymous with the running of the company. I have a few personal complaints about how NKF handles and sells to it's target clientele but I hope that the public does not respond in a way that will detriment the underlying charitable means in which we seek to perform in the first place.

    • we have donated part of our hard-earned money to NKF and we deserved to know how the money was spent. Hiding the facts from the public is wrong and I'm very disappointed with NKF.

    • I am extremely disappointed and sorry for those kind souls whom are being betrayed for their kindness. And also sorry for the kidney patients and their families. I wonder whether are they being sufficiently subsidy and did NKF really care for those patients or just only for their own salary and benefits.

    • I have withdrawn my donation from NKF since early this year. As a non profit organization, I don't understand why Mr Durai is paid substantially for his services. Is it necessary? The money could be put to better use eg. having more dialysis centres, subsidies etc. Please re-look at the organization's purpose and be responsible to those people in need and donors.

    • 1) the cover letter of this petition need refinement. Should be more specific and say that the donation is 'donated to the foundation' rather than 'donated to him'. 2) I will remove my family's monthly Giro donation to NKF if Durai remains in NKF. Will not be fair if his luxurious work life is supported in such a way any longer.
