On June 12th, 2009, TV stations across the nation start broadcasting in digital only. This means changes for over-the-air viewers who will get more channels and clearer signals, but need new equipment to continue getting free TV.

Media Alliance and the Media Action Grassroots Network, along with other local community leaders, are concerned that low-income families, immigrants, seniors, communities of color, and people with disabilities will be hardest hit by the D-TV Transition. Many are unable to afford converter boxes costing ten or twenty dollars more than the $40 government coupon.

As members of the national Media Action Grassroots Network (MAG-Net), a strategic alliance of regional grassroots media groups, we are working for a socially responsible transition where retailers provide a no-cost converter box. As part of this effort, we ask Radio Shack to offer one digital converter box, equipped with closed captioning and analog pass-through capabilities, for $40 the cost of the government coupon.

If you shop at Radio Shack and you care about a socially responsible transition, let Radio Shack know you want a No-Cost Converter Box for the D-TV Transition.
