The private company Tubelines has announced that it will suspend services on the Northern line on weekends for 20 months from March.

Nash Ali, Labour's leader the borough of Camden said: "The borough of Camden, from Tottenham Ct Road up to Hampstead and Kentish Town, will be disproportionately hit on weekends. It may have a massive impact on the Lock market, one of London's largest tourist attractions and a source of local jobs and trade."
"This plan seems designed to protect the shareholders of Tubelines, rather than the interests of travelling Londonders. I urge Camden Council to make immediate representations on this and take action, just like it did when private companies wanted the Channel Tunnel works to go 24hrs after similar contract slippage."
We, the undersigned, agree that Camden Council should make immediate and urgent representations to Transport for London and Tubelines.

- The tube should put the needs of residents over the desires of shareholders

- The only time for leisure are weekends and also to get to work at weekends if one works in shops in the West End or anywhere on the Northern Line.

- How can other counties upgrade and maintain their tube network without closures and without the consequential extra costs? Why is Camden council not doing anything about this? We want a greener Camden and less cars.

- There is a total lack of joined up thinking on this. It will kill the village at the weekends when trade is at its busiest. There was no consultation and no assessment on the effect this would have on businesses in the area. Putting the whole line out of action when only a small part is being worked on is inexcusable. The underground is dark anyway so why not work from the end of evening rush hour until the morning? The people that though this up ought to be sacked for complete lack of forethought.
