A gross error in judgment has been made at the Omaha Community Playhouse, regarding the dismissal of Artistic Director Carl Beck. In an art venue as strong as the Omaha Community Playhouse, the artistic vision must supercede the old-fashioned business model. Instead of cutting artistic staff, new ways must be found to raise money, and cost-cutting must not be done at the expense of the art to be produced. At this point, it would appear the immediate solution is to re-hire Carl Beck, remove Tim Schmad and re-organize the board.

    • As a working proffessional in New York City, I have seen the quality of work that is expected in a payed arena. This is the quality that Susan and Carl put on stage time and time again. The fact that they would be dissmissed is an absolute travasty and I am ashamed of OCP for having done it. I am almost ashamed to have them on my resume as an actor!

    • There is much more behind the scenes on the financial difficulties at the playhouse than what is publicly known. It is unfortuante that Carl was laid off but again, there are severe financial issues that brought about this situation. I just wish this support was to the Playhouse since they obviously didn't do this for any reason but financial and to keep the Playhouse as an option for those who want to stay involved in the Playhouse. We desperately need to support the Playhouse financially or the consequences to the community will be far greater than the loss of the wonderful Mr. Beck.

    • The building and the business of a every successful theatre I have collaborated with is only as strong as the core artistic staff's vision, attitude and execution. Audiences are not there to merely rent a seat or buy a drink at intermission, they are there to feel, to think, to escape, to explore, to imagine, to laugh, to experience and to be inspired. For that, they are happy to pay for a ticket. The added value is that they leave the theater better than they arrived.
