Increase the Penalty for Animal Cruelty
In Support of Senate Bill 221 and House Bill 480

Ohio's animal cruelty law has not been changed since it was enacted in 1875. While other states are taking animal cruelty seriously, Ohio lawmakers have consistently refused to implement a law that punishes animal abusers. The Humane Society of the United States has named Ohio the worst state for pets due to its inadequate animal protection laws.
It is time we all took a stance in defense of those who cannot defend themselves. Animal cruelty is wrong, how we deal with cruelty issues effects us all as a nation. A person who maliciously tortures or mutilates an animal is a threat to everyone in the community. These people are more likely to also perpetrate violence against humans. It is time to say we will not allow this to continue.
We believe these bills go far to make changes in Ohio's 125-year-old anti-cruelty law, labeled the weakest in the nation by the state's own Legislative Service Commission. We agree it is time for Ohio to step into the 21st Century and support Senate Bill 221 and House Bill 480.

    • Nobody could possibly know the facts regarding those who commit crimes against animals, and not make this a felony offense. Not to mention the fact that the animals, do get scared, feel pain, and have love to share.

    • What will it take for us to care for all living things, even our laws which protect humans have faults and loopholes, let our animals feel the laws protection to its highest degree. the first step to a long road is with these two proposed bills.

    • Increase the penalty for animal cruelty. It is time that we join other parts of the country and the other developed nations of the world, and began treating animals more humanely. We will be judged as a society, by the manner in which we treat our animals.

    • We need this Bill passed as it is just ridiculous to allow people to kill and/or abuse animals and not have any type of penalty. We in Ohio need a felony for this type of animal abuse.

    • I am ready and willing to do whatever it takes to initiate mandatory sentencing for offenders of neglect and cruelty of any type against animals. In an attempt to accomplish this I don't want to see what happen in Virginia to happen to us. So, lets take a long hard look at any possible legislation being drafted and make sure it doesn't affect those of us that are trying desperatly trying to help these poor creatures. Lets hang the SOB.'s that perpertrate such crimes.

    • Having been involved in animal rescue for many years, I am continually astonished and dismayed at the lack of concern when animals are involved. It has been proven that animal cruelty is directly related to child and spousal abuse, yet Ohio lawmakers continually turn their backs, bury their heads in the sand and let animal abusers go with a slap on the wrist. It's time Ohio enters the 21st century and realizes that Ohio laws are from the dark ages and desparately need revision.

    • The penalty for animal cruelty should be stiffer in all states, it should match the cruelty to children, they fit in exaclty the same catagory.

    • People who rescue animals in Lawrence County feel helpless because animal abuse is not taken seriously. We have seen dogs who needed vet care and long term recovery time awarded back to their neglectful owners. Making abuse and neglect a felony may make the courts take these cases more seriously. I think it is time to stop listening to the lobbyists and do what you know the majority of Ohio citizens would want you to do. Protect the innocent, voiceless animals. Make extreme abuse a felony on the FIRST offense, call in social services to check any children the abuser may have, and require psychological counseling if convicted.

    • I volunteer at a county dog pound. I see and hear of alot of people who do not care for their animals the way that they should. Some people do not feed their animals enough to maintain a healthy weight. Some people do not care if they clean up after their animal that is tied up to a dog house and can not get out of their own filth. I have seen animals who are abused to the point that they will not trust anybody and will bite in fear. There needs to be stiffer laws with stiffer penalies. The animals can not speak for themselves, so lawmakers and people need to stand up and speak for the animals.
