Are you the Author?
We, the Archos enthusiast community, believe the Archos Multimedia line could be greatly enhanced through an open-source firmware project.
We believe that this will be beneficial for Archos' customers and, through an increase in sales, Archos itself.
We request that Archos support, or at the very least not hinder, 3rd party efforts to write software for their hardware. Though any direct support would be greatly welcome, we only ask that Archos allow the creation of for-free, completely original 3rd party software for the Archos line of portable devices including, but not limited to, the AV300s, AV100s, and JBM20s

    • I won't consider upgrading to an AV320 (or higher) until the software allows greater exploitation of the hardware, e.g., the ability to read .txt, .rtf, .htm, .pdf files, a calendar, address book. etc.

    • I purchased an Archos Recorder because of Rockbox... If Archos continues its anti-opensource stance, the recorder will be the last Archos product I own. I am actively looking at other vendors for my next purchase and openly share my a commentary about Archos with anyone interested in the technology.

    • I own a Recorder20, and would be totally frustrated with it if not for the opensource Rockbox project, which has vastly extended and improved the capabilities and stability of the unit. I would consider upgrading to one of the video units if there was an opensource project I could use in case the Archos firmware is not good enough.

    • Archos, why would you ever want to stop this? The only reason I bought an Archos in the first place was because of the fantastic community supporting it. If these policies don't change, I will never buy an Archos product again, and will encourage my friends to do the same. Do not underestimate the importance of being the only alternative to "closed-source" alternatives.
