We, the undersigned, petition the Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors to NOT cut Outdoor Programs from parks and recreation. The educational opportunities provided by Outdoor Programs, which include summer camps, hikes, paddling instruction, nature classes and school programs, are affordable and open to all ages. The scope of these programs cannot be found any where else in the area.

- I've lived in 12 states and 50 countries and Outdoor Programs is the most unique department I've seen ANYWHERE. Do NOT eliminate these programs.

- The Chesterfield Outdoor programs are essential to the health and well-being of residents not only of Chesterfield County, but of the entire greater Richmond area. A huge cross-section of the popultion is served through these programs. Minds as well as bodies benefit ; being outdoors, learning skills, climbing, kayaking , and camping are invaluable to young minds. Beyond all this, how in good conscience could the "Wounded Warriors" program for veterans be eliminated? As a community we must consider all our residents and promote their well-being. There are alternative ideas to this extreme measure of cutting the outdoor programs and we expect another solution to be found.

- Education of the great outdoors is crucial to developing a childs appreciation of nature, which in turn fosters their sense of responsibility towards it. For many children these programs are the only exposure they have to nature. Taking away these very affordable programs will greatly diminish their appreciation for nature and foster a careless attitude towards the environment. There HAS to be another way to balance the parks and rec budget without cutting outdoor programs in their entirety.

- I've become very involved in outdoor activities after years of attending programs through Chesterfield Parks and Recreation. Because of the skills I've learned from those program I've founded a outdoor club at my university that has reached hundreds of students, all which would not have been possible if outdoor programs through Chesterfield Parks were not available. In particular the kayaking and nature programs have made huge impact on my life and I am incredibly disappointed that Chesterfield government would even consider shutting these important programs down.

- These classes teach the young and old an appreciation of the outdoors and outdoor activities. They teach safety, leadership and conservation through recreation. A lot of these classes become so popular that they have waiting lists associated with them. The Chesterfield Outdoor Recreation program is truly a valuable resource that should not be discounted.

- Paddling soprts are the fastest growing sport in this country and education as to safety on the water is a critical need, more than ever before. Ignorance in all outdoors recreation is a killer, safety best addressed through public education.

- My wife and I started kayaking with a class at Chesterfield Parks & Rec. We grew our skills with play days on the James River, and we have sent three other beginning kayakers to the beginner's class. PLEASE find a way to keep the outdoor programs running. Thank you for your consideration.
